How to create a Vision statement

In five minutes

“If Not Now When: Create a life and career of purpose with a powerful vision, mission statement and measurable goals” by Maureen F. Fitzgerald, PhD

The five steps to creating a mission

1. Vison: Create a vision of your ideal life

2. Vessel: Identify what makes you unique

3. Mission: Define what you wish to accomplish

4. Goals: Set goals

5. Action: Define action steps

What is a mission? A mission is a reason for being. It provides a template that can be used to direct, create, implement and evaluate all that we do.

The benefits of a mission:

• It provides a sense of purpose

• It gives life direction

• It provides a sense of contribution

• It helps when defining goals and priorities

• It aids in finding meaningful work and activities

• It helps to align your uniqueness with your work

• It improves well-being

Step 1. Create a Vision

What is a Vision? A vision is a picture of your ideal life. It is a statement of your dream of the “end result” you want to have achieved or accomplished in your life.

Exercise: Imagine your perfect day:

• Where are you?

• What are you doing?

• Who are you seeing?

• What are you wearing?

• How are you feeling?

• Who is in your life?

• What are your personal qualities?

Take your perfect day and write it as a vision statement

• It must be written in present tense – as if it already exists

• It must be in enough detail that you can actually see it, feel it, small it taste it.

• You must put aside beliefs that might prevent it from happening
