At some point in your journey of awakening, you will realize that nothing external to you can bring you lasting happiness. This is a difficult part of the journey.
You may realize that no car, no house, not even relationships will bring you the joy that you truly ache for. When you get to this point, it can be a bit depressing.
You not only do you realize that all of your happiness depends entirely on you but also that you no longer have to spend your days endlessly wanting things and accomplishing things. You can actually stop mindlessly doing and you can also also stop searching. And with this often comes a terrible emptiness.
Here is a beautiful quote by John Ruskan (Emotional Clearing) that captures this:
“If you stop searching, at first you may be left with the terrible emptiness that is no longer masked by the false hope that searching brings. This emptiness must be worked with like other perceived negatives. Indeed it is the main issue we must all face. Real work on yourself begins when you start to integrate and stop being motivated by whatever form the emptiness takes, whether it is longing for security, sex, power or relationships. I promise you, eventually you will become clear and experience a freedom and exhilaration that you didn’t think could exist.”
As for a remedy for this sense of emptiness, I have found that sitting in the feeling of emptiness and also meditating and journaling helps. I also engage in self-inquiry, which I will talk about in future posts.
