In my upcoming book “Wake the F Up” I describe the process of waking up from an egoic-state of consciousness to an awake-aware state. This can be a long process (journey) and one that most of us are going through on the planet today.

In that book I describe five steps to awakening - from understanding the Human Condition to dealing with your ego and your shadow, and ultimately letting go.

What I did not mention is the very real pain I faced, and continue to face, as I am going through this process. As you may know, waking up is life-long process, so it’s helpful to know what you are likely in for.

Here are the five reasons why waking up is so painful:

1. It is terribly lonely. Unless you have a close friend, who is awake or on the path, you will have no one to talk to. You will lose friends who can no longer relate to you.

2. It can feel like you are going crazy. Everything that you thought was true feels no longer true. It seems that what you see no one else can. It’s hard to explain in words.

3. You feely wobbly because you no longer feel that you have a solid foundation. Those people who you depended on and the beliefs and assumption you relied on no longer seem so solid. As a result you can often feel unsure and hesitant.

4. You are no longer motivated by the things that once motivated you. You see working 9-5 just to get paid as silly. You may even lose the joy you once had when engaging in activities with friends.

5. You ache to go home. This is the most painful feeling of all. You feel more empathetic and become sensitive to all the suffering in the world. This human “living to survive” all seems absurd and you ache to be free.

Although you may experience all of these, most who are on this path also know at some level that they chose this life. They know that they are part of this larger awakening and the benefits of awakening outweigh the difficulties. As Marianne Williamson says:

“It takes courage. . .to endure the sharp pains of self-discovery rather than choose to take the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.”
